Event description

Description

There are an estimated 2000 native bee species in Australia, within which there is a huge diversity of lifestyles and levels of sociality. One group in particular, the highly social stingless bees, can be kept in hives and make great additions to gardens, schools and farms, in subtropical and tropical Australia.

In this half day workshop Dr Tobias Smith will introduce native bee diversity, including descriptions of the secret lives of some particularly exciting species, and then focus on the biology and management of stingless bees. The workshop is split: between a lecture-style presentation, that include macro images of our native bees, followed by a practical session, in which participants will look inside live stingless bee hives and learn the process of hive propagation, where new hives are created by dividing strong colonies into two.

Note: This workshop is a repeat of presentation on Wednesday 29 November at Lake Macquarie City Council.
