Description

Live Performance by Mohsen Soltany Zand with DATSON

It has been 10 years since Mohsen Soltany Zand's double CD, Australian Dream was released into a pre-facebook, pre-internet media of only newspaper and radio to broadcast its existence. Mohsen is a tireless advocate for refugees and speaks often at rallies. His work is political and polemical, spoken with the voice of one who stands often at the edge of the abyss, drawing on the 4 years of immigration detention he endured. His spoken word double album Australian Dream sees Mohsen perform his work to his own music, and on his own self-made instruments, inclduing an electrified seetar.

He is a instrumentalist and collaborates in live performance with DATSON, the electronica project of Geoffrey Datson and Annette Hughes. On a range of handmade electronically effected instruments they create a sound field of Iranian-voiced, velvet-underground english folk, into which he patterns his words. The performance is interlaced with snippets from the Australian Dream recordings which form the spine of the show. There are fantastic juxtapositions - like the voice of Brian Brown lamenting his incarceration in detention, Tom Keneally and Claudia Karvan and many others lending their voice to Mohsen's bleak experience of the shameful policy of detention of asylum seekers.

Supporting Mohsen on the night will be Saba Vasefi: a poet, award-winning artist, Director of International Women’s Poetry & Arts Festival, and Ambassador of the Asylum Seekers Centre. Saba will be joined in performance by her daughter Minerva Khodabande, cellist and vocalist. Both women are Iranian refugees who arrived in Australia in 2010.

The performances will be followed by a short Q&A.
