Event Information
About this Event
Join us for morning tea and presentation from guest speakers David Booth (proud Warramungu/Yuggera man, educator & artist), Ted Setnikar (Educator, author & volunteer) and Jana Norman, PHD (Doctoral researcher & board member). Morning tea will be provided by AHH Life Skills' new retro coffee cart named 'Miss Sunshine'.
This event will commence with an acknowledgement of country by David Booth, Artist, cultural educator and proud Warramungu and Yuggera man. David will share music, his perspectives as an Aboriginal Australian, hills resident and also launch the community mural created in NAIDOC week.
We will then hear from guest speakers Jana Norman, PHD. Doctoral researcher and The Hut Community Centre Board Member and Ted Setnikar, Educator, Author and Volunteer. Jana will be sharing information about an Australian Research Council (ARC) project she is a part of that links the University of Adelaide with the History Trust SA and the Migration Museum. The project is called 'LGBTQ Migrations: Life Story Narratives in the South Australian GLAM Sector’ (GLAM stands for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums). This project will be collecting oral histories of people who identify as LGBTQ who migrated into or around South Australia from other parts of Australia or regions of the state between 1950 and 1999. This project hopes to hear not only what it was about their own life circumstances that drew them to SA, but also how politics and the state’s reputation for greater inclusivity during that time might have played a role in their migration decisions. Ted will be talking about his experiences as a migrant and gay man and the experiences of older LGBTQ Australians of diverse backgrounds. His life story is documented in his autobiography ‘The Lacemaker’s Son’ which has raised thousands of dollars for The Hut Street Centre through its sales. He is a regular speaker and educator at state and national conferences on the topic of identity, culture, forgiveness and love.
Morning tea is provided and will be served by Miss Sunshine Coffee Cart. Miss Sunshine Coffee Cart is a local, social enterprise of AHH Lifeskills and offers training, social engagement and pathways to employment for people with disabilities. This initiative is about raising awareness in the community, connecting with others and making great coffee.
