Event description

Description

ALCS: Wednesday 6 - Friday 8 November

Training Day: Tuesday 5 November

The 2019 Australasian Leadership Computing Symposium (ALCS) will be a unique event for the Australasian computational science community.

Taking place from the 6th to the 8th of November at the Australian Academy of Science and The Australian National University in Canberra, ALCS 2019 will be Australasia’s research supercomputing users’ forum, as well as a flagship promotion of high-performance computing (HPC) and high-performance data (HPD) in Australasia.

ALCS 2019 will be a gathering of scientists from five key computational science disciplines in Australasia:

  • astronomy
  • genomics
  • geosciences
  • climate and weather
  • materials science

ALCS aims to share knowledge about HPC and HPD in practice within and across these powerful research communities.

ALCS 2019 will provide an opportunity for researchers to extend their networks, share leading practice, learn from their peers and build their understanding of the role of HPC and HPD in their current and future work.

EMCR/Student Registration:

To support students and early- and mid-career researcher (EMCR) attendance, ALCS is offering a reduced rate of only $50.00. To take advantage of this offer, please contact nci.communications@anu.edu.au with:

  1. Your full name
  2. Either:
  • Your conferral date and institution
  • A copy of your student card

Upon NCI approval, you will be given instructions on how to access your ticket.

Science Streams:

The Symposium will feature guest keynotes from international speakers, as well as discipline-specific streams for deeper investigations of current scientific content.

  • Please select the stream most relevant to you when purchasing your ticket.

Training Day - 5 November:

HPC and HPD training will be held the day prior to ALCS.

  • High-performance data training session

The NCI National Research Data Collection is Australia’s largest collection of research data, encompassing more than 10 PB of nationally and internationally significant datasets. They are available through NCI’s National Environmental Research Data Interoperability Platform (NERDIP), which provides an integrated platform for users to access datasets managed at NCI. At the high-performance data training session, we will offer introduction on NCI’s research data collections and jupyter notebook examples on accessing data through various services and platforms.

  • NCI’s New HPC System

In late 2019, NCI will bring a new peak HPC system into production and retire Raijin, which has served the NCI user community for six years. The NCI User Services group will present training with a focus on helping new and current users to get started on the new HPC system. Two training courses will be offered:

    1. Getting Started - for new users

    2. Transitioning from Raijin - for Raijin users

  • Please add a free ticket for this day to your selection to register your interest - more details will be available closer to the date.

Please refer to the ALCS website for a program outline - information will be updated as details are confirmed.
