Event Details

Since the late 1960s, Australians have been getting increasingly more involved with environmental volunteering groups. Environmental volunteering programs are a highly effective tool for community engagement, but the value of these programs is often misunderstood. Join our August Networking Event to hear insights and techniques from Rafiq Huq, Environmental Manager from Greening Australia, about the social value of environmental volunteering and how to set up an effective volunteer program. Greening Australia is a national not-for-profit organisation that returns life to landscapes so that people and nature can thrive.

Presenter: Rafiq Huq, Environmental Manager (Community Engagement), Greening Australia

Rafiq Huq has worked in the natural resource management sector for more than 30 years in different countries. During the first part of his professional career, he worked as an Agriculture Extension Officer on a World Bank project and attended training by international experts on organising groups and disseminating information. Volunteering has played an integral role in Rafiq’s life and he has participated in many volunteering programs since his student days. His professional and volunteer experience includes;

* Developing and managing one of the largest environmental volunteering programs run by The Hills Shire Council in New South Wales;

*  Carrying out research within Western Sydney University and then Bond University (Gold Coast) to develop a concept and to investigate the practical application of his concept to evaluate the social values of environmental volunteering.

*  Successfully managing the 500 Schools Program run by Western Sydney Parkland Trusts, the Community Corridors of Cumberland Stepping Stone Program and the Ropes Creek Green Corridor Program, funded by the National Landcare Program.

Today, Rafiq works as the Environmental Manager (Community Engagement) for Greening Australia, one of the largest not-for-profit environmental organisations in the country. He is also an active member of the network of Regional Centre of Expertise on ESD, a multi-stakeholder global network of sustainability education program run by the United Nations University.
