About this Event

In keeping with social gathering regulations, this event will be held live in the pub for a limited amount of guests. We are allowed a maximum of 20 people, so besides the speaker and representatives of the Gold Coast Skeptics executive team, that leaves us with space for 17 audience members. You MUST have a ticket if you're attending in person - we'll be checking these to make sure we don't break any rules.

For those who can't come, the talk will also be held online via Zoom. To join the meet-up, to go:  https://bond.zoom.us/j/98221457244

Speaker: Martin Bridgstock

Talk topic: Hunting the dark emu - applying skepticism to Australian history.

Bruce Pascoe’s book Dark Emu has been fabulously successful in Australia, with large sales and multiple awards. Pascoe’s claim that aborigines practised agriculture, built sizeable permanent villages and dammed rivers has been widely praised and also adapted for classrooms.

On the other hand, there has been a savage burst of condemnation from conservative commentators. Terms like “Liar,” and “Hoax” have been applied to Pascoe and his work. Another commentator described use of Pascoe’s work in the classroom in these terms: “Fake history has become fake education.” In addition, attempts were made to induce the Federal Police to investigate Pascoe for fraud.

In the face of this polarisation, a skeptical approach seems called for. Does the evidence which Pascoe produces support his claims about the aborigines? This presentation gives the first findings from Martin’s research. The results are astonishing, and completely unexpected. Martin concludes his talk with some indications of what this all means for the future. This talk is brand new, and presents results that nobody else has seen.

About the speaker: Dr Martin Bridgstock is a retired Senior Lecturer from Griffith University. He has been an active skeptic for nearly four decades, becoming a life member of the Australian Skeptics, and winning a $10,000 prize for skeptical thinking. He is also a Scientific and Technical Consultant to CSI, the American skeptical organisation and has contributed dozens of articles to several skeptical magazines.
