About this event

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Paris Peace Agreement on Cambodia, Asialink and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) are pleased to host a 2-day conference discussing Cambodia's Paris Peace Accords and their implications for diplomacy, democracy, and peacebuilding in Southeast Asia.

Over four sessions held on the 28th and 29th of October, the conference will explore the many facets of the peace accords, as well as how lessons learned from the accords can be applied to the wider region. The conference will bring together both those with personal involvement in the accords and those with profound interest in the accords, to discuss the peace process and explore the successes and challenges that arose when brokering the accords. The process of peacebuilding in post-conflict Cambodia and wider reflections on democracy and peacebuilding in the region will also be examined.

DAY 1

Opening Remarks

Brokering Cambodia's Paris Peace Accords

The Paris Peace Accords on Cambodia were a significant achievement, involving substantial diplomatic efforts by many stakeholders within and outside of Cambodia and Southeast Asia. Australia, amongst other crucial countries, played a pivotal role in brokering the peace agreements and ending years of armed conflict in Cambodia. This session examines the diplomatic and negotiation strategies adopted by the countries involved in achieving the peace agreements, and the challenges they overcame in the process.

Peacebuilding in Post -Conflict Cambodia

The military operation and the peace keeping process post-Paris involved significant commitment from the international community never seen before. At the same time, the implementation of the Paris peace agreement was fraught with challenges and exposed some of the shortcomings of the peace agreements. This session looks at the peacebuilding efforts in post-conflict Cambodia and the factors necessary for sustainable peace, post-war reconstruction and a transition to democracy.

DAY 2

In-Conversation with Professor the Hon. Gareth Evans AC QC FASSA FAIIA and Former Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr. Marty Natalegawa

Join two key players in the Paris Peace Accords and subsequent peacebuilding endeavors as they discuss the evolution of peacekeeping in Southeast Asia.

Reflections on Democracy and Peacebuilding in Southeast Asia

Described by many at the time as one of the most complex and ambitious peace agreements in history, the Paris Peace Accords provide an important case study for peacebuilding in Southeast Asia. This session explores the lessons that can be learned from the agreements, and invites wider reflections on peace, democracy and human rights in the region from a number of participants.

This conference is part of a series of activities planned by Asialink and the AIIA in 2021 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Paris Peace Agreements.
