Event description

Description

Date: 7 September 2017
Time: 4pm-6pm

Many students, including English language learners have difficulty understanding the kinds of academic language needed to succeed in school, especially if they have never been explicitly taught how to use it. These students include students who have attended school for much or all of their education but have not yet mastered the language of school.

This session will focus on exploring how academic language is used in all four domains (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in order for EAL/D students to achieve.

Series blurb:

Academic language is used in all four domains of language (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and all four domains are needed to achieve.

The mastery of speaking skills in English is a priority and learners often evaluate their success (and are often evaluated by teachers) in language learning on the basis of their spoken language proficiency. The functions of speaking include talk as interaction, transaction and performance and include particular strategies.

Successful listening can also be looked at in terms of the strategies the listener uses when listening. Does the learner focus mainly on the content of a text, or does he or she also consider how to listen? A focus on how to listen raises the issues of listening strategies.

With teacher mediation and built-in scaffolds, students' speaking and listening in a content-based (e.g. science, history mathematics, geography) classroom contributes to learners' language development and can be progressively transformed across a mode continuum into the academic language of the school curriculum.

This mediation in turn contributes to students’ ability to comprehend academic text and to successfully construct them.

This series of workshops will provide teachers of students in middle years (3-8) with knowledge and strategies to support the macro-skills of talking and listening, reading/viewing and writing in the academic registers of school across the curriculum.
