ASV's 100 Year Anniversary Lantern Slide Show Event
Event Information
About this event
When it becomes fully operational, the James Webb Space Telescope promises to provide humanity with the newest images of the furthest depths of the unknown Universe. But have you ever wondered how astronomers imaged faraway objects over 90 years ago?
The Astronomical Society of Victoria, and Deeds Brewing in Glen Iris, is proud to
present the Slideshow Spectacular - a night where you will get to see the magical mystique of the Milky Way as our forebears once saw them in the 1930s. It will be the ASV’s first Centenary Year event ASV’s Events. We will have beautiful and historical astronomical glass plate slides of nebulae, galaxies, star clusters and more, which will be shown through our genuine Magic Lantern slide projector. A Magic Lantern is an early type of image projector and was developed in the 17th century.
Dutch astronomer and inventor Christiaan Huygens, who discovered Saturn’s moon, Titan, is now largely credited to have created the magic projector. Not only will we be able to see what faraway objects were like back then, you’ll also get to feel what is was like back then! We’re encouraging all attendees to dress up in their best 1930s outfit!
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ASV has made the decision to reschedule the event to Monday, 28 February.
