Event description

Description

All the way from Oakland California, Ashanti Branch, Founder of The Ever Forward Club is calling all Gold Coast families to come together to discuss the serious impact of today's society and how it is impacting our kids.

Did you know?

  • Compared to girls, boys are two times more likely to flunk or drop out or school.
  • Compared to girls, boys are two times more likely to receive special education.
  • Every day three or more boys commit suicide.
  • 93% of boys are exposed to internet porn before age 18.

Ashanti will be sharing his story of how he went from being raised by a single mother on welfare in the ghetto of Oakland California to attending California's premier engineering Colleges. Having successfully "escaped" the ghetto life, Ashanti's passion for his local community never left.

After tutoring struggling students and realising his true passion was teaching, he changed careers. He had suddenly found the “fire” that was missing in his life, and he hoped to ignite a similar enthusiasm in his young students. In 2004 as a first-year teacher, he started The Ever Forward Club to provide a support group for African American and Latino males, who were not achieving to the level of their potential.

The Ever Forward Project has aligned with The Mankind Project Queensland and The Representation Project to present an evening for Gold Coast families looking to empower their children with one very powerful documentary.

'The Mask You Live In'

The Mask You Live In Synopsis:
Pressured by the media, their peer groups, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflicts through violence.

These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men.

Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

This initiative is calling on ALL Gold Coast families who are concerned about today's society and culture and the impact it is having on the next generation. We are responsible for today's world. That is why WE must take responsibility and lead the charge towards a better future for our kids.
