Event description

Description

ASEN Canberra is hosting a Training Camp at the ANU Kioloa Campus. Kioloa is on the stolen land of the Murramarang people of the Yuin nation. Sovereignity was never ceded. Where we walk at Kioloa, we do so on land that has always been and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Training camp is an activist skillshare which brings people together to network around shared interests and discuss issues that affect all of us. It includes a series of workshops where we will share knowledge, skills and build important connections.

It aims to create a space safer than those we find elsewhere, with the values of freedom of expression, respect and inclusion. It's not just for experienced activists, students, young people or ASEN members. If you are working towards an environmentally and socially just world, this is for you!

******IMPORTANT*******
This event will not tolerate racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism or other forms of discrimination or abuse.

What can you expect to learn at training camp?

You can expect a healthy mix of:

  • learning more about the history of environmental and Aboriginal rights movements

  • lessons, updates and skills from current local campaigns

  • foundational organising skills like how to effectively facilitate, social media, theories of change and campaign strategy

  • meeting lotsa good people!!!!

Where’s the venue?

Training camp will be held at ANU’s coastal campus in Kioloa, 496 Murramarang Rd, Kioloa NSW 2539.

Kioloa is on the South Coast, on the land of the Murramurang people as part of the Yuin Nation. It’s about 2 ½ hours from Canberra, 3 from Sydney and more from everywhere else.

What kind of accommodation is there?

At Kioloa there will be a mix of dormitory beds and camping spots available. There are approximately 40 beds, split into rooms of 6. You can request a bed when you register, otherwise bring a tent and sleeping stuff for camping!

What will I need to do over the weekend?

Training camp is run as a collective community event, so everything is done by volunteers. We ask everyone to volunteer for three shifts over the course of the weekend i.e helping cook breakfast, lunch or dinner, cleaning up or making sure the day runs to time.

Can you help me with transport to camp?

We can help put you in touch with people carpooling from your area and make sure you get a lift! When you register, you can say whether you’ve got a car and can offer lifts, or need help finding one.

For First Nations people, we can cover costs getting you to and from camp.

How accessible is the venue?

We’re finding out right now and will update this soon! When you register, you can let us know your accessibility requirements if you’d like an organiser to get in touch to talk about how we can meet your needs.

I’m not that involved with activism or environmental campaigning. Is this for me?

Yeah it is! If you’re passionate about building an environmentally and socially just world, this is for you. You don’t need to be involved in anything particular to come along, it’s a good chance to meet people, learn more and find out how to get involved.

I’ve been to ASEN training camps before. Will I learn different things this time?

Yeppo! We’re streaming sessions this year to make sure we are catering to people who’ve done a facilitation workshop a million times and are looking for different / more advanced skills and discussions. Also, you should run a workshop! Let us know when you register if you’re keen to be part of the facilitation team.
