Course duration: 8 hours

Designed for: Asbestos Removal Risk Management Services (aRRMS) has developed an informative and hands-on training course focussed on equipping tradies with the knowledge and skills to work on asbestos containing material safely (e.g. drilling, cutting, painting, sampling) and to remove non-friable asbestos containing material and asbestos contaminated dust within the limits permitted without an asbestos removal licence.

The course can be undertaken directly with aRRMS or through the Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV). This course is not designed to satisfy the non-friable asbestos removal training required for those seeking to undertake licensed non-friable asbestos removal work.

Pre-requisites: CPCCOHS1001A – Construction Industry White Card

Pre-entry requirements: English language, literacy and numeracy skills are required to conduct assessments.

Course overview:

  • To inform trainees of the health risks associated with working with asbestos
  • To equip trainees with knowledge to recognise different types of asbestos containing material
  • To demonstrate how to safely undertake limited permitted non-friable asbestos removal work according to legislative requirements
  • To demonstrate how to safely work on non-friable asbestos containing material
  • To demonstrate the selection, use and fitting of personal protective clothing and respiratory protective devices

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course the trainee will be able to:

  • Review the history, characteristics and uses of asbestos
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of asbestos containing materials
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the different types of health hazards associated with asbestos
  • Identify and label non-friable asbestos containing materials
  • Interpret an Asbestos Register and identify what needs to be revised for planned refurbishment or demolition works
  • Plan and prepare for the safe removal of non-friable asbestos containing material and asbestos-contaminated dust up to the amount permitted to be undertaken as unlicensed asbestos removal work
  • Plan and prepare for working safely on non-friable asbestos-containing material in accordance with legislative requirements
  • Select and use relevant equipment, personal protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Decontaminate work areas and dispose of asbestos materials as required by legislation

Delivery method: Training will be delivered utilising theory and practical activities. Simulation will be based on actual conditions. Delivery will include instructor led presentations and scenarios.
