Event description

Description

**Notice (as of 14 Sept 2018)**
The schedule has been compressed to be one day for Friday the 28th of September, 2018. Paid tickets discounted.

Overview
There is a lot of buzz around augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). It has the potential to revolutionise how we interact with computers and each other - as well as completely transform current industry practices in design, manufacturing, and education. See what all the fuss is about and get a head start in this upcoming wave!

Intended Audience
This is intended for professionals (outside of game design) that are interested in how AR and VR can be applied to their own respective fields. This is also appropriate for game design students wanting to get a head start in this area. Existing technical skills in C# or Unity3D are not necessary but an advantage. The day will be run as an practical workshop with a strong hackathon element.

** LUNCH PROVIDED **

Members of the Macquarie Association of Computing Students (MACS) and IGDA Macquarie can get free tickets for both days.

Virtual Reality (Session 1: 10am-12pm Friday, 28 Sept)
The great advantage of VR is its ability to trick the brain into thinking that it really is in a virtual environment. Testament to this are people forgetting that virtual billiard tables don't exist (and falling over), or people crouching involuntarily fearing that they will fall.

Learning outcomes:

  • Get a good overview of 2018 VR landscape. Hardware and software.
  • Appreciation of the power of Presence, health issues around VR.
  • Able to design viable VR apps with diegetic interfaces; 3D design paradigms.

Augmented Reality (Session 2: 12:30pm-2pm Friday 28 Sept)
AR has been explored and previewed in SciFi films for decades. Now we are at the point where these futuristic visions can start to become reality. Jump on this exciting bandwagon early!

Learning outcomes:

  • Get a good overview of the 2018 AR landscape. Hardware and software
  • Appreciation of tracking technologies; their strengths and weaknesses
  • Able to design viable AR apps with limitations and capabilities in mind

Supervised Hacking (Session 3: 2pm-6pm Friday 28 Sept)
Once you've got an idea of what's currently out there, it's time to actually build stuff!

Learning outcomes:

  • Able to produce a simple VR and/or AR prototype that clearly demonstrates design direction

Tickets
Session 1 (VR): $150
Session 2 (AR): $150
Session 3 (Hacking):$150
All Sessions: $250

Free for MACS and IGDA Macquarie Members
