Event description
Join us for a free talk with artist Marie Mitchell accompanying the Australia Wide Seven exhibition at the Bunbury Museum.

About this event

While everyone is aware of the quilt as a traditional bed covering, patchwork and quilting techniques along with a multitude of fabric manipulation and surface design techniques have been used to create works of art since the late 18th century. Within the context of the current Australia Wide Seven exhibition at the Museum, exhibiting artist Marie Mitchell will discuss the evolution of the quilt from functional to a contemporary visual art form.

Date: Saturday 23 October 2021

Time: 10.30am to 11.30am

This is a free event, with tea and coffee provided.

RSVPs via Eventbrite encouraged for catering purposes.

About Marie Mitchell:

Marie developed a deep connection to nature during childhood, while creative expression in fibre, fabric and stitch have been part of her life for as long as she can remember. Marie specialised in textile & design at university and art college; moving on to share these skills with students over a three-decade teaching career. Marie's work combines these two lifelong passions in the exploration of nature's fragility and our role as caretakers for the future.

About Australia Wide Seven:

This event accompanies the Museum's current exhibition Australia Wide Seven, a nationally touring exhibition showcasing forty contemporary works by members of the Ozquilt Network, Australia's organisation for art quilters.

Demonstrating the scope and possibilities of art quilt making, Australia Wide Seven celebrates the talents of Ozquilt Network members and their diverse techniques, craftsmanship, and creativity.

This is the only opportunity for Western Australian audiences to view this exhibition before it heads to the National Quilt Museum in the USA.

Australia Wide Seven is partnered with a stunning selection of locally-produced quilts crafted by the Bunbury Patchwork & Quilting Group.

Australia Wide Seven runs until 7 November 2021.

The Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre is open 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays).
