Artist talk with Judy Watson - in person
Event Information
About this Event
Acclaimed Waanyi artist Judy Watson will speak in conversation about her research and the process of creating her major new work, juguma, 2020 with Professor Jakelin Troy, Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research at the University of Sydney.
This public artwork was commissioned for the University of Sydney’s new Susan Wakil Health Building. It takes the form of a bag, seven meters in length, constructed of weathered steel and set within a garden of native medicinal plants and bush foods. The artwork recognises the role of the dilly bag and basket woven by Aboriginal women and used by them to feed and nurture their communities
"Juguma is the local Sydney name for the string bag made and used by female ancestors to collect and carry. This artwork pays homage to the important role of Aboriginal women who gathered food and bush medicine to feed, nurture and heal their communities." - Judy Watson, 2020
