Currency

Currency is a new screendance made with a group of local Warrnambool dancers spanning 6 decades in age, from teens to sixties. It explores questions of ageing and visibility in girls and women, and represents ageing as ambiguous and slippery, as movement along a current or continuum of time. Challenging fixed ideas of ‘old’ and ‘young,’ it also considers issues of ageing and cultural currency, the desire to be visible or to disappear, and the experience of our physical bodies as simultaneously architecturally formal and illusory.

Screendance

Screendance is an art form that creates dance specifically for and with the camera, in which the editing process becomes part of the choreography. In creating Currency, the dancers contributed to the development of the movement material, which was then edited to further reflect the themes of the piece. Experimental editing techniques help convey a sense of ambiguity of identity and the slipperiness of our sense of time. Filmed in amongst disused farm equipment amid the spaciousness of sky and fields, the piece also considers the beauty inherent in ageing, decay and transformation – a different beauty to that of youth.
