ARI Seminar - NAIDOC Week- Uncle Denis Rose & Dr Wayne Koster
Event Information
About this event
For NAIDOC Week, we're thrilled to have Uncle Denis Rose and Dr Wayne Koster presenting on their partnership in eel migration research. This seminar is a rare chance to dive deeper into the mysterious world of eels. Their joint presentation 'On the tail of the eel - creatures of mystery' will share the importance of eels (both culturally and ecologically) and what we've learned through satellite tracking.
Denis Rose is a Gunditjmara traditional owner from South West Victoria and has had a long involvement in natural and cultural heritage management. Denis manages the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, one of the world’s largest and oldest aquaculture systems, through his role with the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Denis is also the Chair of the Victorian Indigenous Seafood Corporation and was involved in the establishment of the nationally and internationally recognised Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs) program. This program has now voluntarily dedicated more than 67 million ha of Indigenous-owned and managed lands as Protected Areas throughout Australia.
Wayne's a Senior Scientist in the Applied Aquatic Ecology team at the Arthur Rylah Insitute for Environmental Research. Much of Wayne’s recent has focused on the movements and migrations of freshwater fish species and environmental water requirements of native fish. His current projects include mainstream-tributary dynamics of silver perch and golden perch populations using acoustic telemetry, diadromous fish migrations and links to flows using passive integrated transponder technology, and oceanic migrations of anguillid eels using satellite tracking.
