Melanie Potock, feeding expert is presenting this one day workshop in Melbourne on ARFID - The Anxious Eater.

Course Description

Helping a child with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and anxiety-based feeding behaviors can feel overwhelming to parents & professionals. Learn specific techniques to help the anxious eater and the entire family! Understand the relationship between avoidance and anxiety, and how to stop food anxiety for good. Treating a child for extreme picky eating requires expert and research-driven strategies that help the entire family get back to healthier, happier mealtimes.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Describe nine strategies to reduce a child’s anxiety before, during and after trying new foods.
  2. Describe five strategies to help parents follow-through on the home program.
  3. Discuss four different types of anxiety disorders that may be associated with pediatric feeding disorders
  4. Understand the three hallmarks of ARFID and how each is related to anxiety in children.
  5. Understand the role that avoidance plays in both anxiety disorders and pediatric feeding disorders
  6. Know which professional treats anxiety disorders and which evidence based practice has been found to be successful

Educational Level: Intermediate


Parents and family members, childcare professionals, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, lactation consultants, early interventionists, educators and appropriate others in pediatric health professions or care including Dietitians, Doctors and Teachers.

About Melanie....

Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLP, treats children birth to teens who have difficulty eating. Melanie’s advice has been shared in a variety of television and print media, including The New York Times, Huffington Post and Parents Magazine. She is the co-author of the award-winning Raising a Healthy Happy Eater: A Stage-by-Stage Guide to Setting Your Child on the Path to Adventurous Eating (2015) and Baby Self-Feeding: Solutions for Introducing Purees and Solids to Create Lifelong Healthy Eating Habits (2016).
