Description

Are politics and policy incompatible? Democracy in the age of "mega-identity" politics.

D4D co-founder Bryn Davies will be leading a conversatiom this August to explore the psychology of groups and politics vs good policy and government. Join us over a delicious feast from the team at Bistro Lola to explore some of the questions and ideas put forward below.

Are politics and policy incompatible?

Policy requires co-oporation between sides to create something that is greater than the sum of the parts. Whereas politics is a zero sum game. We have created a system where if one side wins the other side loses and it works against what is necessary for good policy. This has always been the case for elections … the concern is that it is increasingly the case policy and legislation too.

Who polarised first?

A question that arises from the increasing polarisation of political parties is why has the electorate followed? Which came first? Did the electorate polarise and the parties follow? Or did the parties polarise and the electorate aligned to where their ideals and identities best fit... but then stayed even while the parties polarise further?

How polarised are we really?

While we have the ideological progression with mega identity on either side this can not be the whole story. Are we really that much more polarised than we were? Or are some people more willing to compromise regularly on their ideals in order to stay part of the party and for political gain. For example there was no rift in the Republican Party post Donald Trump despite there being many people within the Republican Party you would expect are ideologically opposes to many of his policies and points of view.
