The next talk in the highly successful series will further investigate the value of thoughtful and clever design in making sure our urban streets and parks are safe and vibrant places. Under-utilised laneways, reserves and ‘left-over’ spaces present exciting opportunities for new places to come alive. Through design, ordinary places can be made extraordinary.
Grace Mortlock (Otherothers) and David Neustein (Other Architects), Lisa Merkesteyn (Carterwilliamson Architects) and Julin Ang (studioplusthree) will each speak about their past and present projects. They will also make an original proposition for a new intervention in Marrickville, offering fresh thinking and identifying compelling opportunities for the future.
Curated and introduced by local architects Sam Rigoli, Michael Zanardo and Casey Bryant, the Architecture on Show talks are presented by Inner West Council in association with the Australian Institute of Architects.
Biographies
Grace Mortlock and David Neustein
Other Architects operates from within architecture’s traditional limits, while Otherothers explores the periphery. The tandem practices seek ‘other’ approaches that challenge conventions, expectations and trends. Together, architect/curator Grace Mortlock and designer/writer David Neustein work across residential, commercial and institutional projects, curate installations and events, exhibit projects internationally and teach at UTS.
Lisa Merkesteyn
Lisa is an architect and senior associate at Carterwilliamson, who are known for creating robust buildings that consider the environment, context and the people who inhabit them. The opportunity to work on both heritage buildings and new sites, combined with travels throughout Europe and Asia has given Lisa appreciation of how wonderful cities can be made with considered urban planning and great design.
Julin Ang
Julin Ang is a director at studioplusthree, a multi-disciplinary design practice working across architecture and exhibition design. Having graduated from London’s Architectural Association, Julin worked in London and Hong Kong for Heatherwick studio before co-founding studioplusthree. The studio received a 2016 NSW Architecture Award for Small Project Architecture.
