Professor Richard Johnson AO MBE, was previously a Director at Denton Corker Marshall and since 2000 a Director at Johnson Pilton Walker, in Sydney and the architect of some of Australia’s most significant contemporary cultural buildings. Born in Sydney and educated at the University of New South Wales, he graduated in 1969 with First Class Honours and the RAIA Silver Medal. He continued his education at University College, London, receiving a Master of Philosophy in 1977. He has lectured and taught widely and has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales between 1999-2008 and Professor in Architectural Studies there since 2008.

Richard Johnson was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal in 2008, for his exceptional body of executed work and outstanding contribution to the profession. His many notable works include: the Australian Embassy Beijing; the Governor Philip and Macquarie Towers, Sydney; the Museum of Sydney; 363 George Street, Sydney; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Asian Gallery; the Hilton Hotel redevelopment, Sydney; Westpac Place, Sydney; the Arts of Islam exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2007; the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; the Australian Museum, Sydney and between 1999-2008 new work at the Sydney Opera House and masterplan for future refurbishments, in close association with Jørn Utzon.
