Event description
“Archaeology and Aboriginal history of wetlands and waterways in the Munday Swamp and Yule Brook region” by Carly Monks

About this Event

The wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have been a focus of Aboriginal lifeways for tens of millennia. Artefact scatters, subsistence records, buried palaeo-surfaces, and ethnographic and historical records from sites in the Swan Coastal Plain document the importance of waterways and wetlands to Noongar people throughout the region’s human history, including their continued cultural significance following European colonisation. This talk will review the archaeology of Aboriginal use of wetlands in the Swan Coastal Plain, with particular emphasis on the wetland landscapes that extend between the Swan and Canning Rivers, including Munday Swamp, Yule Brook, and the Greater Brixton Street Wetlands.
