Event description

Description

The Australian Human Rights Institute and RMIT University have partnered with the Australian Human Rights Commission to host the Australia consultation on applying a gender lens to the UNGPs. The consultation is convened by the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights.

We are inviting you to participate in the Australia consultation, one of the several consultations convened by the UN Working Group in different world regions.

The aim of this consultation is to explore both good practices and challenges concerning corporate human rights due diligence in addressing gender harms and women’s human rights.

The consultation will consider the reasons why adequate attention has not been given to the gender‑differentiated impact of businesses on women’s rights, the barriers that women face in accessing effective remedies, and possible solutions to address these.

The two-day Australia consultation would have a series of thematic panels, where experts will introduce key issues and challenges and then engage participants to collect their input.

The themes to be covered during the consultation include situating gender, business and human rights in the international context, issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, workplace inequalities, supply chains, vulnerabilities in gendered workplaces (care sector and sex industry), the mining and construction sector, and the finance sector.

The consultation includes multiple stakeholders and will inform the UN Working Group’s proposed guidance to assist both states and businesses on ways to “protect, respect and remedy” the rights of women in the business context, in line with the UNGPs.

We hope that you can attend the consultation. Registrations will close Friday 26 October 2018.

The finalised agenda will be sent to registrants closer to the date.
