Event description

Description

The AON Women’s University Series is the first domestic Australian 7s competition for women, offering the nation’s best up-and-coming talent the opportunity to train and play in a high-performance environment, serving as a potential pathway to national selection. Universities from around Australia will compete at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston in August 2017. Teams competing are: Bond University, Griffith University, Macquarie University, University of Canberra, University of New England, University of Queensland, University of South Australia and University of Tasmania

The entire Australian Women’s Sevens squad will play in the Aon Uni 7s Series, with each of the teams allocated at least two members of the current Australian squad. The University of Tasmania Lions has been allocated Ellia Green (Rio Olympic Gold medallist) and national players Georgie Friedrichs and Shanice Parker, and the team is being coached by Luke Burgess, former Australian Wallaby.

Unlike traditional rugby, Rugby Sevens involves 7 players on each team playing 7 minute halves. The sport is a fast paced and entertaining game with an average of 70 secs between tries. This form of the sport rose to prominence with the establishment of a Men’s World Series in 1999 and Women’s in 2012. Sevens is now played in over 100 countries by 30,000+ teams and is seeing enormous growth particularly in new markets such as USA, Russia, Africa and Asia (fastest growing sport in the USA).

Women's sevens is one of the World’s fastest-growing team sports, increasing from 200,000 to 1.7m participants in the last 3 years, including a 33% increase in Australia in 2016. The extraordinary growth of Sevens has led to its inclusion in the Commonwealth Games (including Gold Coast 2018) and the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 & Tokyo 2020.

Come along, you are sure to be entertained!
