Anzac Square Memorial Galleries Talk Series: Love and War
Event Information
About this event
During times of conflict, love and relationships continued to play an important role in the lives of service personnel and those left behind on the Homefront. Few relationships were left untouched by the scale and devastation of WWI and WWII.
Join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries for this free talk exploring the personal experiences of several Queensland couples including:
- Francis Leofric Armstrong, who was killed at Gallipoli leaving behind his young wife Annie and their newborn son Frank
- Minnie Phipps and Jim Basset who meet and fell in love in England in 1917
- Elfriede Geissman, who nursed and married a wounded American soldier in Brisbane 1943; and
- WWII pilot and POW Charles Fry who was reunited with his sweetheart Beryl Smith after eight long years serving aboard.
This talk series draws from State Library’s digital collection of military stories, diaries, letters, photographs and artefacts.
After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.
Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
