Top tips for working with your supervisors

Although you will not find yourself in a classroom very often when you are a research candidate, you still have a teacher: your supervisor. The relationship between supervisor and HDR candidate is more like a working relationship than a pedagogical one and might be your first introduction in how to work in a team in academia. Research shows that team work is a highly regarded attribute by academic and non academic employers, so it's important to get this relationship right. In this session we will look at how to get the best out of this relationship and how to manage any conflict that might arise. We will cover the roles and responsibilities of supervisors, candidates and panel members and share some tips for navigating these sometimes complex relationships. This workshop is useful for people just starting out, but is open to anyone who would like to learn more about how to work with other people effectively in a research setting.

This workshop is open to all researchers. It is also part of the Science, Health and Medicine Career Development Framework program and can be counted as a valid activity

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Briefly explore the history of the PhD and think about where we are today
  • Review the policy statements at ANU
  • Look at the most common problems and why they happen
  • Find out what to do if it all goes wrong

This workshop will be presented by Dr Cally Guerin, a Researcher Developer in the Researcher Development Unit at The Australian National University. She has worked in researcher education since 2008. Her research interests include research writing, academic identities, the academic workforce, and doctoral education. She is a founding co-editor of the DoctoralWriting blog. Cally is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now known as Advance HE). You can read more about her research on ORCiD and here, and follow her on twitter @CallyGuerin.
