With the announcement of the Mercat's closure, we thought it pretty fitting to celebrate this Summer's New Year's Day party where we began throwing parties quite a few foosball seasons ago. Join us for one final dance across the entire Mercat venue in the sun - or in the basement ;)
After many years, the stars have aligned for Animals Dancing to present Optimo. The Glaswegian duo of, JD Twitch and JG Wilkes teamed up in 1997 after having both played individually for some 10 years. Bored with the banality of seamless mixing and 4/4 techno all night, the two started the weekly Sunday night party 'Optimo (Espacio)' in Glasgow's infamous Sub Club, which saw an anything goes approach to genre and mixing and garnered the two a worldwide reputation that led to them taking their style on the road, touring abroad weekly for many years, while still finding time to release new, previously unreleased and reissued music on the 3 Optimo labels and play at home in Glasgow as much as possible.

Another pair who continually knock our metaphorical socks off are Vancouver's Jack J & Liam Butler. Part of the Mood Hut collective that includes (but isn't limited to) Cloudface, House Of Doors, Local Artist and Hashman Deejay, the pair have a distinct knack for playing, making and releasing some of the nicest sounding records we've ever heard. Jack's solo work travels from the new age dreamscapes of his 'Mother Official' cassettes to sublime 'Looking Forward To You' and 'Thirstin' (Future Times), while together, the pair have created a distinct smokey house sound across their productions for PPU, Mood Hut and their collaborative Snaker release.
Someone who we're very pleased to welcome to Melbourne is Cologne based musician and DJ, Lena Willikens. For more than 5 years, Lena has been in charge of long and sweaty Friday night parties at Düsseldorf’s Salon Des Amateurs (also home to Jan Schulte, Tolouse Low Trax, Vladimir Ivkovic + more). She is also a dedicated member of the Cómeme records tribe and radio host of 'Sentimental Flashback' for Radio Cómeme. With productions tipping their hat to EBM, no wave and industrial + selections that pool proto techno, electro and more, we're excited to hear Lena bring her sound to the Mercat for the first time.
