Gold Coasters rally to save abused elephants in Thailand

MORE than 10 top-class performers from Sunshine Coast to Byron Bay will rally to help elephants that have suffered abuse in the entertainment industry when they perform at the 11th annual Animal Action event on October 7 at Quality Hotel Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast.

Animal Action Events founder Aldwyn Altuney said the Animal Action Night for Elephants would raise funds for World Animal Protection (WAP), which is supporting Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in the forests of northern Thailand provide a safe haven for abused elephants.

“BLES has rescued 27 elephants since it was founded by Katherine Connor in 2007. Here, their chains are removed and their wounds tended to. They are free to roam across 750 acres of lush forested land, where they can forage in the mature banana plantations, grasslands and open fields,” Ms Altuney said.

“WAP is supporting BLES to build two night enclosures at the sanctuary, which will keep the elephants from wandering on to neighbouring private land at night.”

Ms Altuney said elephants were naturally social animals.

“In the wild, they have complex herd and family groups. But many captive elephants are never allowed to socialise and interact freely,” she said.

“At the sanctuary, however, they form friendships and bond groups - a freedom they were denied for years in captivity.”

Ms Altuney, a photojournalist and director of AA Xpose Media, founded Animal Action events on the Gold Coast with the world’s first Animal Action Day in 2007 after being sick of seeing animal cruelty over the years.

“I watched the Earthlings DVD and was holding my throat and crying at the end of it,” she said.

“I couldn’t believe some people could be so cruel. I always felt helpless to do anything about it and then I thought, if I could just encourage everyone to take action for animals, even in small ways, we can all make a difference collectively.”

She said people could do this by making healthy choices while shopping - buying cruelty free; reducing their consumption of animal products or becoming vegetarian or vegan. They can also write to their local, state or federal elected rep to convey views on animal protection; volunteer with animal organisations; write a letter to the editor of local papers; recycle and compost at home and express concerns to food companies and supermarkets that are involved in sustaining animal suffering.

Animal Action Night for Elephants will feature Sunshine Coast duo Banned from the Club, Gold Coast Battle of the Bands winners Mistram, Native American performer Walter Smith, Macleay Island sound therapist/ flute player Karen Christie (who was first to bring in tuning forks for therapy into Australia), Gold Coast opera singer Alana Scott, Ocean Shores folk rock reggae singer songwriter Craig Telfer, Mt Tamborine opera singer/ sound healer Marguerita Vorobioff and a few other surprises.

Speakers include MC Aldwyn Altuney, author/ empowerment coach Lynda Petterwood about how to stress less and enjoy life more and Best Massage Australia CEO/ owner Brendan Lee, who will talk about how to find your animal spirit guide.

Tickets for Animal Action Night for Koalas are $60 plus booking fee each or $55 plus booking fee each for a table of 10, including entertainment, welcome drink and 2 course vegan or vegetarian meal.

There will also be roving masseuse Mario Fabris, stalls and raffle prizes.
