Event description

Description

Exhibiting artist Angela Tay is motivated by the need to find peace within herself. Her art-making processes allow her to articulate her concerns, both personal and communal, her "sense of place in the world” and sense of self, of permanence/belonging and of “home”.

Join Angela for a demonstration of her painting process which is very similar to ebbing tides surging and retreating. It is both gestural and spontaneous.

"Firstly I splash and pour ink and watercolour onto tissue-thin absorbent Chinese Xuan paper laid on the floor. I then add water to facilitate more flow. As I move around the paper, as if striding over rock pools, the mixing and flowing merges and blends on paper, just like seawater washes and swashes, froths and eddies on surfaces of rock pools and sand at low tide. The results are ever changing and unpredictable."

You will also get the opportunity to participate in Angela's installation "To Walk Amongst Others", Angela's tongue-in-cheek contribution to current public galleries and museums funding policies in Australia., which encourages artworks to appeal to broad audiences and across age groups. Angela says, "This is my institutional critique of the policy of populism in order to attract funding for the arts."
