Description

A Storyology Event

A camera and a sense of adventure have taken freelance photojournalist Andrew Quilty from Sydney to the global stage. He’s now based in Afghanistan, and his coverage of the country’s recovery from war has featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME and last year won him Australian journalism’s highest honour, the 2016 Gold Walkley. In this special event for students, Andrew will speak in conversation with Heather Faulkner about how he got started in photojournalism and where his career has taken him. Over casual drinks he’ll talk about what it’s like working freelance, how social media has become part of the photographer’s kit, and show some of his favourite images.

FREE for students / $10 for others.

Registration essential.

Meet the speakers:

Dr Heather Faulkner is a documentary photographer and immersive-storyteller whose work focuses on the themes of identity, place and belonging. Her transmedia documentary project, A Matter of Time, has uncovered the hidden narratives of lesbian-identified women who experienced living in Queensland during the ultra-conservative Joh Bjelke-Petersen era government. Her book, North of the Border: Stories from the A Matter of Time Project, was published by University of Western Australia Publishing in 2016. Faulkner is a senior lecturer and the Program Director of the Bachelor of Photography at QCA, Griffith University.

Andrew Quilty’s career began in Sydney but he has based himself in Kabul, Afghanistan, since 2013. In that time he has travelled to more than 20 provinces across Afghanistan, work from which has garnered several awards, including the Gold Walkley — the highest prize in Australian journalism — the Polk Award for photojournalism, and a Picture of the Year International award. In 2016 a selection of Quilty's work from Afghanistan, After Enduring Freedom, was exhibited at the world's premier festival for photojournalism, Visa Pour L'Image, in Perpignan, France. Andrew joins us in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney with the support of Nikon.
