About this event

The paper will consider the main ethical obligations on an advocate in the following circumstances:

(a) when one is precluded from acting for a client

(b) the contents of pleadings, affidavits and submissions

(c) ex parte applications

(d) dealing with witnesses

(e) communicating with the court

Mention will also be made of the statutory obligations on lawyers arising under s 37M and s 37N of the Federal Court Act

About the presenter

Antony Siopis was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was educated at Christian Brothers College, Kimberley, and Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC. He obtained degrees in Arts and Laws from Rhodes University, South Africa, and the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University.

Mr Siopis practised as a barrister in South Africa and later as a solicitor with Baker & McKenzie in London before immigrating to Australia in 1982. Mr Siopis lectured in commercial law at the University of Western Australia for 3 years before joining the law firm of Parker & Parker, where he was a partner for 9 years.

In 1995, Mr Siopis joined the Independent Bar of Western Australia. In 2001 Mr Siopis served as counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Finance Broking and he was appointed Senior Counsel in 2002. He was appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia in 2005 and retired from that Court in 2018.
