Description

Ita Buttrose AO OBE is a truly exceptional Australian, a legendary media trailblazer, businesswoman and 2013 Australian of the Year.

As Patron of the Jodi Lee Foundation, Ita continues her passion for preventative health in raising awareness of the prevalence Australia’s second most common cancer, Bowel Cancer, and helping to inform people how they can reduce their risk.

The evening will be integral to raising vital funds for much needed Bowel Cancer research.

About the speaker, Ita Butrose AO OBE

The 2013 Australian of the Year, Ita Buttrose has twice been voted Australia’s most admired woman. She has had a distinguished media career in print, radio and television, and hosted Studio 10 at Network TEN from 2013-2018.

As one of Australia’s busiest health advocates, Ita’s commitments include National Ambassador of Dementia Australia having served as National President from 2011-14; patron of the Macular Disease Foundation and Emeritus Director of Arthritis Australia, an organisation she chaired from 2003-2006. Ita currently chairs the Advisory Board of The Australian Mental Health Prize.

Ita created the ground-breaking Cleo magazine, was the youngest ever editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly, the first woman to ever edit an Australian metropolitan newspaper in Australia as Editor-in-Chief of the Daily & Sunday Telegraphs, and the first woman director of News Limited Australia.

Ita was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her services to the community especially in the field of medical education and health care for her work in spearheading Australia’s HIV/AIDS Education Program. She received an OBE for her services to journalism and the Centenary Medal for business leadership to Australian Society.

In 2014 Sydney’s Macquarie University conferred an Honorary Doctor of Letters on Ita in recognition of her contribution to the arts. In 2015, Ita was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Wollongong for her contribution to mental health and ageing.

In November 2018 Ita was awarded UNSW’s highest honour – an honorary UNSW Medicine doctorate. The award was given in recognition of her eminent service to health and for being an inspirational role model for aspiring women in business and for those wanting to make a difference in society.

She has written 11 very successful books including Eating for Eye Health – The Macular Degeneration Cookbook which she co-authored with Sydney chef, Vanessa Jones.

His international credits include lead roles in The Phantom of the Opera, Calamity Jane, Romeo & Juliet, Chess, Evita, End of the Rainbow and Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White opposite Simon Callow and Anthony Andrews. Michael has also performed in concert throughout Europe, including Rome, Paris, Edinburgh and Cyprus.
