Event description
An evening with Dr Mara Adelman, Emeritus Associate Professor, Seattle University, on cross-cultural practice and the global refugee crisis.

About this Event

You are invited to an evening with Dr Mara Adelman, Fulbright alumna and Emeritus Associate Professor of Communication from Seattle University, to look at cross-cultural practice and Australia's response to the global refugee crisis. Attendance at this event will be by gold coin donation. Light refreshments will be provided.

This event is part of a broader program of events across Australia entitled 'Frayed Lives, Threads of Hope: Australia's Response to the Refugee Crisis', hosted by the Australian Fulbright Alumni Association and with the aim of creating more awareness about how Australians can respond to the global refugee crisis. As part of this program, Dr Adelman has agreed to spend an evening with ASRC staff, volunteers, members and partners. This will be an opportunity to hear from Dr Adelman about her experiences working in the cross-cultural communication, community building and social support space, as well as her curation and engagement in the Frayed Lives, Threads of Hope: Australia's Response to the Refugee Crisis program.

Dr Adelman will be facilitating three major public forums in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. These events will bring together people with lived experience, experts, musicians and researchers to share insights and experiences. Audience members will be engaged in round table discussions in a 'Salon' format to learn about the refugee crisis and to identify actions that they can take. Dr Adelman has played a significant role in the resurgence of Salons — social gatherings in which people engage in the art of conversation in pursuit of knowledge and fellowship. The Salons are community-building events for all people interested to take learning, connections and action with them afterwards.

The Frayed Lives, Threads of Hope: Australia's Response to the Refugee Crisis event will be held at Melbourne University on 14 November from 6pm-9pm, and a concert Refugees, Remembrance and Resilience: Weaving Together Frayed Lives will be held at the University of Melbourne on Friday 15 November at 7pm.
