Dean is a faculty member of the Harvard Kennedy School and is based at the Center for Public Leadership. He was born and raised in Geelong. At Harvard, he directs the Global Change Agent program and the World Leaders Project. He has consulted with governments, corporations, and a variety of institutions all over the world. He was the leadership mentor to Xanana Gusmao in the transition of East Timor, and served for five years as the Chief Advisor to the president of Madagascar leading one of the most innovative development initiatives in Africa. He has lived with tribal groups in Borneo and done extensive research and consulting in Myanmar, Japan, Singapore, Colombia, Nigeria, Brunei, and the United States. He is the author of two popular books on leadership—Real Leadership: Helping People and Organizations Face Their Toughest Challenges and Leadership for a Fractured World: How to Cross Boundaries, Build Bridges, and Lead Change.
