Event description

Description

Enter into the quiet world of Chanoyu, the Japanese Tea Ritual.

Chanoyu means 'hot water for tea'. It describes the coming together of opposites to create a union, and through that unity a window opens. Water and fire create boiling water. Naturally active people still their bodies and their minds to become channels. Light and earth combine to become Camellia Sinensis. In the rituals of Chanoyu the boiling water, the mediative people, and tea all combine to create moments of openness where we can connect with each other and with Source.

Above a little Japanese restaurant in Preston is a traditional four and a half tatami mat, tea room. It is the home of the Melbourne chapter of a tradition of tea from Hiroshima, which goes back sixteen generations. We are delighted to be able to host our July tea ceremony here. This setting will give you a taste of the subdued beauty which opens to sublime transcendence. This is what underpins Storm in a Teacup's understanding and practice of the spiritual world of tea.

The afternoon will contain the essence of a chaji (tea gathering). You will receive a small kaiseki (savoury snack), an okashi (tea sweet) and a bowl of matcha. The afternoon will begin with a short discussion about the etiquette and the flow of the ceremony and it will end with a conversation between us all about the ritual and how it unfolded.
