-ABOUT THE CAUSE-

The John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) is Curtin University’s flagship co-curricular leadership program. Over the course of two semesters, student teams undertake community-based projects on behalf of not-for-profit organisations to raise both awareness and funds for their cause. New Opportunities is the JCLA team working with Opportunity International Australia (Opportunity) in 2019.

Opportunity is a part of the global Opportunity Network, a leading provider and pioneer of socially focused microfinance that helps families in more than 20 countries around the world.

Opportunity’s primary objective is to end poverty in Asia. In pursuit of this goal, Opportunity has developed a network of programs and support partners (i.e. those who share its values and objectives) to create and sustain jobs in developing countries through a microfinancing system that enables families to break the poverty cycle. Through the power of a small loan, families can start a business, create an income, put food on the table, send their children to school, repay the loan, and systematically work their way out of poverty. It is a ‘hand-up’ not a ‘hand-out’. With 98% of all loans repaid and recycled, money raised and donated to Opportunity continues to make an impact for years to come.
