Extracting Architectural Insights from Coarse-Grained Human Mobility Information ーDesign and Operations, Without Fine-Grained Tracking

Join us for Architectural Manufacturing Research Network_ Lecture Series 04 with Junya Maruyama, PhD candidate in the Department of Architecture at The University of Tokyo. This lecture series is part of a collaborative initiative between ARC Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing (Arch_Manu), Architectural Informatics Society (AIS), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU).

Talk title: Extracting Architectural Insights from Coarse-Grained Human Mobility Information ーDesign and Operations, Without Fine-Grained Tracking

Abstract: People’s movement has long been used to evaluate architectural space, circulation patterns, hotspots, and the effects of design decisions. Yet in real projects, fine-grained tracking, at high spatial and temporal resolution, is often unrealistic due to missing observations, privacy constraints, and operational costs. This talk presents a framework that captures indoor mobility at a “necessary and sufficient” level of granularity for spatial evaluation. Rather than aiming for complete trajectory reconstruction, the focus is on robust mobility structures that support whole-building evaluation. The goal is to introduce techniques for evaluating architectural space using coarse mobility data and to provide a foundation for exploring the latent potential of such data.

Speaker bio: Junya Maruyama is a PhD student in the Department of Architecture at The University of Tokyo. His research develops scalable mathematical optimization methods to collect and leverage indoor mobility data for evaluating architectural and urban spaces. Through collaborations with industry partners, he advances real-world deployment of practical data-driven tools and systems.

SDG Goals: This presentation addresses the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 11.
