Event Details

The Women's Lunch is a joint initiative by the AMOS and CoECSS to address gender issues in the atmosphere and ocean sciences workforce.

The lunch will be held on the first day of the 2014 National Conference of AMOS in Hobart.

Despite the name, the lunch hour will be dedicated to talking broadly about gender issues and so all members are welcome to attend, regardless of their gender. However, women are particularly encouraged to take part.

This initiative is designed to establish whether the AMOS and the CoECSS want to establish a wider women's group that will address gender issues in our field and, perhaps, the wider scientific community in Australia.

In order to address gender issues in AMOS and the CoECSS they first need to be established. For this purpose, we have set up a short survey to collect demographic information from the Australian atmosphere and ocean sciences community. The survey is anonymous and will take less than 5 minutes to complete. We would appreciate your participation in order to best establish what the gender issues are in our community. The survey will be open until mid January and the results will be presented at the Women's lunch.

Some sandwiches will be provided at the lunch, so please RSVP via this service for catering purposes.

12:30pm - 12:45pm: Meet, greet and eat (sandwiches provided)

12:45pm - 12:55pm: Opening presentation

12:55pm - 1:10pm: Guest speaker, Assoc. Prof. Katrin Meissner

1:10pm - 1:30pm: Open discussion on gender issues

Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society

The Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) is an independent society representing the atmospheric and oceanographic sciences in Australia. It currently has over 500 members drawn from the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, the university sector, other State and Federal agencies, as well as the private sector. Most members of AMOS are actively employed in one of the scientific fields covered by the Society, but the membership also includes university students, retired scientists, school teachers and others from the general community with an interest in weather and climate.

AMOS also has an important role as a credible, independent voice for the profession. As part of this role it has established Expert Groups in areas such as climate variability, weather forecasting and physical oceanography and regularly represents the views of its members to Government, institutes and the public.
