Description

Do you like taking weather observations at home? Or delving into the weather of the past?

Do you want to contribute to current scientific research?

The upcoming AMOS citizen science workshop will cover all of these topics and more.

Featuring dedicated research scientists from the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO, you will discover how to become a weather and climate citizen scientist.

You'll learn the best way to set up your personal weather station, and have the chance to uncover a new piece of Melbourne's history in a weather data transcribe-a-thon.

0930 – 1000: Welcome

1000 – 1100: Rescuing our climate history.

  • Linden Ashcroft (Bureau of Meteorology/University of Melbourne): data rescue activities across the world and how you can help
  • Kathy McInnes (CSIRO): Saving Melbourne's tide data
  • Mac Benoy (Bureau/Australian Meteorological Association): 10 years of climate citizen science in Adelaide

1100–1130: Morning tea (provided)

1130–1230: Capturing today's climate.

  • Tim Morrow (Bureau): Weather activities at home and how you can help
  • David Gooding (Bureau): How to take observations for WOW, the Bureau's citizen science portal
  • What do look for in a good weather station (Speaker to be confirmed)

1230–1330: Lunch

1330–1500: In parallel:

  • A workshop about the best way to install/set up your home weather station, the different tools available and how to upload data to the Bureau's WOW webpage
  • A transcribe-a-thon of previously unseen weather and tide gauge records for Williamstown, 1946–1948.
