Description

Myth-busting climate change

Join the Australian Meteorological & Oceanographic Society, in partnership with the Grand Challenge on Climate Change, for a Q&A event with a distinguished panel of international experts in weather, climate and marine science.

MC Craig Reucassel, host of ABC TV’s War on Waste, will lead discussions focusing on climate change and its impact on the environment, health, society and the economy.

Panellists:

  • Gavin Schmidt, climate scientist, science communicator and Director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, NASA

  • Terry Hughes, coral reef scientist and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies

  • Claudia Tebaldi, IPCC lead author, climate modeller at the Climate and Global Dynamics laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research

  • Greg Holland, Willis Senior Scientist, Director of the Capacity Center for Climate and Weather Extremes at the National Center for Atmospheric Research

  • Helen Cleugh, atmospheric scientist, Director of the CSIRO Climate Science Centre

Background:

It was only in the past few decades that climate change leapt out of textbooks and onto political agendas. The science of it fast became a topical issue, and action on it ‘the greatest moral challenge of our generation’.

Climate change today continues to affect the environment, our health, society and the economy. Sensationalism within the 24-hour news cycle finds the media full of both expert and non-expert commentary on climate science and policy. Social media adds even more voice and volume to the already noisy public arguments on what to do, or not do, about climate change. Within this, misconceptions and confusion around science thrive and recirculate over and over despite being refuted by scientists.

So, what are the ‘truths’ of climate change and its impacts? What effects are we seeing now, and what can we expect in the future?

A large part of the forum is question-led, so register here and submit a question to ask the panellists.

The forum is a free public event in association with the joint 25th AMOS National Conference and 12th International Conference for Southern Hemisphere Meteorology and Oceanography, AMOS-ICSHMO 2018: https://www.amos-icshmo2018.com.au/
