Description

Join us for the second Meaningful Movies & Music event, A Night for Refugee Rights, an evening discussing the issues refugees face worldwide and on our own doorstep, and celebrating bravery, reslilience and diversity of cultures.

We are so grateful for everyone who contributed to the launch event's success, and we hope you'll join us as we bring you another powerful night focused on awareness, conversation and action about Refugee Rights during times of global and national turmoil surrounding the issue. We're partnering with Freda's, Parliament on King, Amnesty NSW Refugee Network, Heartdancers, Refugees Welcome and Settlement Services International - SSI to bring you another evening to unite, empower and inspire the broader Sydney community in solidarity to take action and get further involved.

~ THE EVENT LINE-UP ~
6:00PM
We'll be screening Freedom Stories, a collaborative documentary project that explores the achievements and stories of former ‘boat people’ who arrived in Australian waters seeking asylum from the Middle East around 2001, a defining year in Australian politics.

Afterwards, cast member, Amir Javan, will speak about his experiences and participate in a Q&A session

8:30PM
We'll have a lineup of musicians, poets and artists who are or were refugees sharing their experiences through their art. We are so excited to announce that Sahar & Michael and Kween G will be performing. Get ready for a vibrant and powerful evening.

~ THE CAMPAIGN ~
The Refugee Campaign is a global movement close to Amnesty's heart that the organization has been focusing on for decades, especially recently within Australia. Amnesty Internatioanl campaigns for people seeking asylum by urging the world’s governments to do their fair share to protect and assist people who are simply seeking somewhere safe to live.

In Australia, officially no person who arrives in the country by boat seeking asylum can settle here. Instead, anyone who arrives by boat is forcibly taken by the Government of Australia to offshore “Refugee Processing Centres” on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea or the remote Pacific island of Nauru. The conditions for are so inhumane they are considered torture under international law.

For Manus and Nauru, Amnesty demands the government end offshore detention and #bringthemhere. To learn more about global and national refugee human rights violations and the Amnesty campaign, please visit:https://www.amnesty.org.au/campaigns/refugees/
