Event description

Description

Born out of MAV’s ReMastered Myths music program, the unique collaboration between producer/DJ Amin Payne and acclaimed Veena artist Hari Sivanesan deconstructs world music. The duo are launching their debut EP Sarasvati, named after the Hindu Goddess of music, art, knowledge and wisdom. The night will also feature Bashka with their dance music from the dirt streets of Turkey via Melbourne, and the captivating vocals and electronica of Aarti Jadu.

BASHKA
Drawing their inspiration from the vast ocean of Turkish music, Melbourne based group Bashka are creating a new genre which slips between east and west with natural ease. Musically spanning two continents and many centuries Bashka explore the contrast between east and west, composed and improvised, original and traditional, acoustic and digital. Live samples and loops merge seamlessly with ancient acoustic and modern western instruments to create music which brings to life old folk songs, gypsy ballads and dance music from the dirt streets of old Turkey.

AARTI JADU

Aarti is a self-taught “jazz” and “world” musician, singer/songwriter and yogi. Starting off in early childhood with roots in Indian devotional music, such as bhajan, she has weaved together elements of each of her interests into a rich tapestry informed by many disciplines.

She is currently directing herself toward the understanding and education of Hindustani music, under the guidance and tutelage of classically trained Bansuri virtuoso Vinod Prasanna, a musical heir of one of India’s greatest flutist families.

Her experiences with her mentor Vinod, her family, her daily rituals and contemporary singing and songwriting have had strong influences in cultivating a sense of spirit and sensuality.

Her most notable release is a collaborative album Quiet Earth, which combines Indian bhajan with classical Celtic guitar, working with guitarist and producer Matt Coldrick.

After spending the last 4 months in a relatively sterile suburban landscape outside of Perth, Aarti has grown to appreciate her immediate surroundings and come up with, yet again, another way to tell her stories.

She acquired a sampler no earlier than mid-2017, and thereafter spent some time in semi seclusion, and now is ready to debut her first recorded production. This performance pays respect to her many influences and practices, from Indian music and chanting to ambient, and songwriting. She invites us to sit and listen to this authentic autobiography.
