Description

The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc presents Altered States – Platemaking with Aluminium Workshop with Monica Chivas being held on Saturday 24 November 2018. Please find below all the information you need regarding workshop attendance.

Date: 24 November 2018

Time: 10:00 to 16:00hrs

Venue: Building 3 Lions Community Hall, 8 Russell Drysdale St, East Gosford (entrance at the rear of the building)

Monica Chivas studied Graphic Design at TAFE in Melbourne and worked as a draftsperson, a lithographic film planner working at a number of art agencies before she moved to Sydney. Monica became interested in printmaking through Ku-rin-gai Art Centre in the mid 1990s where she returned to study Printmaking at Hornsby TAFE. She joined the Stables Print Studio in 2006 and was a regular exhibitor with this group. In 2016 she joined Open Bite Print Makers and has been exhibiting with them for the past two years.

While with the Stables Print Studio, she began teaching aluminium etching sharing her insights and experiments with her students. Monica follows a low/non-toxic plate making and printmaking practice which sits nicely with the work of The Makers Studio.

This workshop is offered to printmakers with sound knowledge and experience of platemaking terms and purposes. You will have the opportunity to expand your technical skills by altering your plates through a variety of techniques to achieve tonal etchings (both stepped and gradual). Monica will bring samples of plates and prints showing the type of results you are likely to achieve using these techniques. If you have a particular interest that you wish to explore Monica is happy to support you in the process.

What you should bring:

  • Your own art journal & creative ideas for working on A5 & A6 plates

  • Lunch

Bringing your own art journal is important for this workshop as you will explore a range of different techniques. Maintaining your own notes will be invaluable to you when attempting to reproduce these techniques at a later stage.

What will be supplied:

  • A kit containing tracing & transfer paper

  • Aluminium plates A6 & A5 (scrap sizes will be available for experimentation)

  • Liquid hard ground (used outside)

  • Scribes, pencils & sharpies (to borrow)

Morning & afternoon teas will be provided. Please remember to bring some lunch (we have access to a microwave and a fridge) – unfortunately, the cafes are not close, and please remember to wear closed in shoes.

This workshop will enable you to experiment and explore new ideas with an experienced facilitator who will help guide your work and exploration.

If you wish to proof your plates you may like to attend The Makers Studio on another occasion. The Makers Studio has printmaking inks & paper available at very reasonable rates. You will need to book a time for this purpose with Cheryl McCoy (contact number below) who will assist you in the proofing process.

The Makers Studio looks forward to working with you on 24 November 2018.
