Event description

Description

From early beginnings carting goods to the Victorian goldfields, Alfred Felton later established himself as a merchant in Melbourne. Eventually buying a wholesale druggists, Felton and his business partner Frederick Grimwade, the pair made several smart business acquisitions, amassing a tidy fortune for each of them.

Felton never married nor fathered any children, so without anyone to inherit, part of his estate was used to establish the Felton Bequest, a trust used to acquire works of art for the National Gallery of Victoria. Since the bequest was created, more than 15,000 art works have been acquired.
