Event Details

About the talk:
The late Ernst Badian, one of the twentieth century's leading scholars of Alexander published a classic paper, 'Alexander the Great and the Loneliness of Power' in 1964.* But subsequent research over nearly 50 years has highlighted the characters and careers of the men and women who were personally close to the Macedonian conqueror; particularly his mother, Olympias, and powerful mother figures like Ada of Caria, Sisygambis the Persian Queen Mother and the Indian queen, Cleophis, as well as Alexander's wives, and his male lovers including the eunuch Bagoas and Hephaestion - who was undoubtedly Alexander's most cherished friend and confidant, and with whom he wanted to share divinity. This illustrated lecture will focus on those selected few who enjoyed Alexander's intimacy and love.

About the speaker:
Dr Elizabeth Baynham is a senior lecturer in classics at the University of Newcastle, having received her doctorate from the Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Her primary research interests are in the areas of Greek history, Greek and Roman historiography and Greek and Roman art; in particular, the reign of Alexander the Great and his Successors. Her articles have appeared in Classical Quarterly (Oxford) and European and North American journals and in several edited collections of thematic studies.
