Albany Queer Book Club Launch
Event Information
About this Event
Join us launch to GRAI's 🌈Queer Book Club📚 as part of Albany's Pride Festival
At the launch we will discuss the format for the Queer Book Club in 2021, enjoy some light refreshments and discuss our first book Honeybee by West Australian author Craig Silvey.
Honeybee is a heart-breaking, life-affirming novel about Sam Watson, a 14 year old Trans girl discovering herself and Vic an old man at the end of his life. Two lives forever changed by a chance encounter that throws us headlong into a world of petty thefts, extortion plots, botched bank robberies, daring dog rescues and one spectacular drag show.
HOW IT WORKS:
Queer Book Club is a queer-facilitated discussion group that aims to bring all members of the LGBTIQA+ community together in a safe, supportive and inclusive space to enjoy literature, conversation and most of all engage with each other.
For each meeting we discuss a book (which can be provided free for those not in paid employment), and usually another component such as an author Q+A, exhibition by a Queer artist or a local presentation providing insight into the book theme.
Our aim is to bring works by our Queer community to the front and to provide a safe space for storytellers and book lovers as well as those who don't usually read.
To support regional and remote communities, GRAI is developing a virtual Queer BookClub meeting to enable participation from LGBTIQA+ readers from across WA.
The Queer Book Club will bring you books that are a bit different and will expand your thinking; books that will change the way you see your life. And by joining us every month you are given an opportunity to share perspectives, and experiences - to be inspired with new insights and to build community one tale at a time.
You can come along for just one book or join us every month. As an inclusive inter-generational book club, we are open to all members of the LGBTIQA+ community and their friends and allies.
The Queer Book Club is supported by the Department of Communities and Crow Books.
