14th June, 6:00pm for a 6:30pm sharp lecture start.

Justin Stannard

Justin Stannard has been the Chief Design Engineer for GippsAero since 2013 and during that period has lead the design and type certification effort for the AIRVAN10 project. Justin’s responsibilities at GippsAero include being the Program Manager for the GA10 design and certification as well as the head of the GippsAero design organisation. Prior to joining GippsAero Justin was program manager for the airline business unit at Aeronautical Engineers Australia (Nova Systems) and oversaw a diverse range of engineering projects on various transport category aircraft. Project highlights included several avionics modernisation projects, interiors reconfigurations and modifications in support of specialised operations. Prior to this Justin worked for Boeing Australia and was a design signatory for modification and repair projects on civil registered transport category aircraft. Justin was also the design team lead for the HFMOD integration on the CH-47D Chinook.

Justin commenced his career with a Sydney based Aeronautical Engineering consultancy (AutoAvia Design). Notable projects included design, test and certification of Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) for the DHC-6 Twin Otter, agricultural aircraft turbine engine installation, external stores integration on jet aircraft & transport category helicopters and modification of an AS350B3 helicopter for single pilot IFR operations.

Justin graduated with a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (Hons) from the University of NSW and was first granted a CASA instrument of appointment for design approval in 2004. Justin also sits on the CASA certification standards subcommittee and has a passion for the social and economic benefits that export business such as GippsAero brings to the local region and Australia.

Abstract

The GippsAero Airvan10 will be the first indigenously designed single engine turbine aircraft to be type certified in Australia. It is a development of the piston engine AIRVAN8 (GA8) that is produced in the La Trobe Valley and sold in over 40 countries. The AIRVAN10 is being type certified by CASA as a new type (new type certificate) to the latest amendment of FAR 23. The FAA are conducting concurrent validation for the purposes of supporting US Type Certificate issue. The vast majority of the AIRVAN10 design, test and certification work has been conducted in Australia. This seminar presents an overview of the design and certification of the AIRVAN10 including a discussion of engineering challenges incurred throughout the type certification process and a perspective on the design and manufacture of an aircraft within Australia for the global market. GippsAero is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mahindra Aerospace.
