Description

Title:

The role of Pathology External Quality Assurance in improving patient safety.

Speaker:

Dr Tony Badrick - Chief Executive, The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs (RCPAQAP)

Abstract:

External Quality Assurance (EQA) is a process that seeks to challenge the effectiveness of a laboratory’s quality management system, typically specifically to the challenge of quality systems in a medical laboratory. The process involves an EQA organiser sending diagnostic laboratories materials that are or simulate healthy or diseased samples and laboratories are asked to analyse these as they would a normal sample. The results from all testing sites are then collated and compared. EQA has been practised to improve analytical quality for decades and there is much evidence to show that it works.

However, a lot of diagnostic error associated with medical laboratories is caused by pre or post laboratory issues, such as incorrect patient ID, patient preparation, specimen quality and integrity, turnaround time of reports and incorrect interpretation by the referring clinician of the result. This is a new area for EQA to venture into but one that promises even greater patient benefit.

In this talk we shall exam how these non-analytical areas of error are being addressed with a mixture of ongoing EQA programs and one-off surveys and the results of these challenges.
