Description

Title:

Clinical decision-making in hospitals: Where the rubber hits the road!

Speakers:

Professor Tracey Bucknall - Alfred Deakin Professor and Associate Head of School (Research), School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University

Abstract:

Individual patients vary in their responses to treatment, and their health status may change quickly. Clinicians must respond to those changes, quickly synthesising information, then deciding on a course of action. Often decisions are made with imperfect or incomplete information.

Moving between fast and intuitive decisions to slow and calculating decisions, clinicians respond to the complex interplay that occurs between individuals, actions and interactions. They may need to navigate multiple options but accept trade-offs. Time constraints and limited resources can lead to shortcuts, slips, lapses and mistakes. This is real world decision making, where the rubber hits the road.

By understanding how decisions are made in the real world we can then attempt to mitigate risk and combat error. This seminar will focus on some learnings from decision making research in patient safety and the potential for innovative decision supports.
