Event description

Description

How can artificial intelligence improve our education systems? And how does education need to change to deal with an AI-enabled world?

Toby Walsh is Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales and the CSIRO's Data61. The Australian newspaper called him a "rock star" of Australia's digital revolution. Professor Walsh is a strong advocate for limits to ensure AI is used to improve our lives. He has been a leading voice in the discussion about "lethal autonomous weapons" (aka killer robots), speaking at the UN in New York and Geneva on the topic. He is a Fellow of the Australia Academy of Science, and has won the NSW Premier's Prize for Excellence in ICT and Engineering. He appears regularly on TV and radio, and has authored two books on AI for a general audience, the most recent entitled 2062: The World that AI Made. He has recently worked with the NSW Department of Education on their project, Education for a Changing World.

The 2019 Richard Selby Smith Oration is the thirteenth annual event to celebrate the life and work in education of Professor Richard Selby Smith. The Oration is a high profile free public lecture, organised by the Tasmanian Branch of the Australian College of Educators, supported by the Selby Smith Family and the University of Tasmania.

Professor Selby Smith made significant contributions to education nationally and in Tasmania over a long period. He was a foundation member of the Australian College of Educators and an active and long serving member of the Tasmanian Branch. He was a Fellow of the College.

Refreshments from 6.00pm.

Presented in partnership with the Australian College of Educators.
